STUDY

October 8, 2011

In August, I published “I Am a Responsible Patient” (http://livewellthy.org/2011/08/31/i-am-a-responsible-patient.aspx).  I’ve caught a lot of flack about Item 19, “Study.”  My readers want to know, “Study what?”  They remark, “I don’t have time to study!”  Some expressed anger and frustration at my suggestion that they should “Study.”

If knowledge is power, then studying can make you powerful.  In answer to “Study what?”, I say, “Study anything!”  Whatever you learn is likely to help you navigate through life.  What I should have said is, “Study yourself; learn who you are and how to help yourself be a better, healthier you.”

When I’m not working or with my family, I read and study so that I can be healthier and better able to provide for those I am responsible for.  I am a responsible patient and doctor.  Today, I read a great article, “When to see a doctor if you have a new symptom” by Dr. Rick Donahue.  Dr. Donahue’s insight is well worth sharing.  I hope you agree.  (http://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2011/10/doctor-symptom.html).

So, study when you can.  Study whatever you like.  Watch one less TV sitcom and read one more article about whatever you want.  Hopefully, your reading list will continue to include this blog!
