In 2005, she petitioned for an increase in her budget to purchase graphic novels, arguing that academic and critical acceptance of the medium made it relevant. She eventually became a full-fledged member of the Avengers and inherited the name Captain Marvel from the press. Wilde was kind of known for being a troll, and was a master of witty epigrams. In the next panel he literally hangs out at an art museum, above a label that reads “Abstract,” his body now distorted into a red, yellow and black bebop-cubist composition in order to eavesdrop on two cheap gunsels out gallery-hopping. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay (2000) by Michael Chabon: Michael Chabon earned a Pulitzer for his amazing tale of two cousins — one a Jewish-Czech refugee and the other nestled in his native Brooklyn — who play an integral role in establishing the Golden Age of comics. In creating his first graphic novel, Feiffer set out to celebrate the noir novels and movies that he loved as a teenager— The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, “Double Indemnity” and “Mildred Pierce”—invoking also the adventure tales he found in Milton Caniff’s Terry and the Pirates and in Will Eisner’s Spirit.

What if Flannery O'Connor wrote Wise Blood as a graphic novel? In Raguel’s former world, the one in which he had wings, he served as the agent of the Lord’s vengeance. One review sums up the gruesomeness of this book (and illustrates why it is item 1): “I thought that if I made it through story #1 (eating your way through your own prolapsed rectum) that I could get through anything, but I was wrong.” The artist, who lives in downtown Manhattan, believes the world really ended on Sept. 11, 2001 — it’s merely a technicality that some people continue to go about their daily lives.

Through a series of flashbacks and character statements, the novel offers a ‘court-like’ approach to the mystery surrounding her absence. The basic questions are: Will there be color, or just black and white? Overcoming initial panic, he decides to remain as the sole embedded journalist in the devastated, largely depopulated city. Although a heady topic, to be sure (at the intersection of Buddhism and design), it works — and is quite beautiful — as a graphic novel about a person who changed the world.
