And what about the accident victim who is “brain-dead,” but whose biological functions still are maintained by sophisticated machinery? In Florence Marsilio Ficino (1433–99) identified Plato as the primary ancient teacher of wisdom, and (like Bonaventure) cited Augustine as his guide in elevating Plato in this way. The generation who resisted the Vietnam War has ensured a consensus among cultural elites about the ostensible futility of that struggle. Biblical authority, so it is claimed, provides a degree of clarity and reliability which rational discourse can never hope to attain to.74 A principal aim of this chapter has been to illustrate the naivety of such optimism. It is part of Christian doctrine that human persons are capable of coming to a knowledge of what is true and what is good, that they can recognize truth and goodness because of their very being.7 This is sometimes referred to as natural morality because it is available to all human beings, regardless of their culture, faith or religious convictions.

Conscience is our capacity for making such a discernment. The long answer is that, like the several floors in a tall building, engagements with ethical issues occur at several different levels of interaction, and if we take them all into account there are important differences. As in interpersonal workplace behavior, we expect Conservative Protestants transpose cultural structures regarding God's altruism in seeking sinful human beings and the concern to witness to moral absolutes (and thus God's work in their lives) to give sacred reinforcement to criteria that go beyond their own self-interest.

While I believe that both sources of moral insight are significant, I am unwilling to weaken the role of actual principles and rules too much, either at a normative level or a metaethical one. His second in command feels convinced that they are not under such awful orders; there is a tense confrontation between the two. It is precisely this seeming relative ease in altering the human person that gives rise to a great number and variety of moral problems concerning hypnosis. The dominant attitudes of prophetic faith are gratitude and contrition; gratitude for Creation and contrition before Judgment; or, in other words, confidence that life is good in spite of its evil and that it is evil in spite of its good.

As the story of creation unfolds, the author regularly comments, “And God saw that it was good.” The world as God created it, Christians believe, is essentially good. It is easily confused with the former because of its uncompromising attitude toward all the impulses of nature; but it never condemns natural impulse as inherently bad. Proverbs 8 is a speech by Hokmah, as she cries out in the street calling people to know her. Would an all-powerful, all-loving God save all people from evil, if not in this life, in an afterlife?

Dodd (Gospel and Law [1951]) argued that Jesus' 'precepts' must be understood precisely as precepts, but then went on to say that they were intended to specify the 'quality and direction' which acts must have if they are to be genuine expressions of Christian love. This virtue of nature may be destroyed by rationality. "The native hue of resolution" which is "sicklied o*er by a pale cast of thought" may be some prompting of natural impulse, as, for instance, a mother*s concern for her child or the emotion of pity for the distress of another.

Interestingly, the results show that religious conservatism has a small but significant negative effect on altruistic decision-making criteria, net of its positive, indirect effect through moral absolutism. Consequentialist theories became popular in the 18th century by philosophers who wanted a quick way to morally assess an action by appealing to experience, rather than by appealing to gut intuitions or long lists of questionable duties. There was a case a while back of a small church in Eastern Ky that refused to marry a long time member who came back from college with a black man. Though Geisler does not cite it, here at least appears something like the moral conflict which he posits in his graded absolutism. To those who enter into this field, however, much of what is written can appear confusing or beyond reach.

Lehmann begins his book with the problem of making ethics a Christian theological discipline. I will consider my business a ministry to introduce people to Christ. We have already defined Christian in general terms as one who consciously chooses to become a follower of Jesus, that is, to decide to use Jesus' life and teachings as a model for his or her life. While critics of virtue ethics often charge that it fails to provide the concrete guidance that its rivals offer, Deane-Drummond argues convincingly that the theorists who have offered either deontological or consequentialist accounts of Christian ethics are not able to offer any more non-question-begging advice than those working in the virtue context.
