March 24, 2012 You can drink, smoke, and eat pure fat. You can sleep off last night’s binge, ignore your hygiene, bath in sugar, and when you get sick, pull out your card. You can shoot up, smash your head into the pavement when your hog crashes. It’s ok! Either the card or the government will be responsible. If all else fails, you can sue! It’s your father’s fault: bad genes. We are entitled!
The healthcare system is broken. Everyone thinks they know why, including me. I know why! It’s the missing link’s fault! Who is the missing link? You are.
Our healthcare system should work well. There are millions of patients who want to get well. There are well trained doctors who want to help people get well. There are hospitals, diagnostic centers, and labs designed to help the doctors and patients in their quest for health. There are therapists, counselors, nutritionists, nurses, aides, and social workers at the ready to lend a hand. So, why is this magnificent system broken?
Because you are! You rely on a plastic card. You believe the card entitles you to access the healthcare system with little penalty. You believe that you are not responsible for your health; your card is. Your doctor is. Your government is!
Sure you bitch about your out-of-pocket expenses and your insurance premiums but you can’t fathom how much the real cost of repairing you is. You want the best, most expensive treatments available. You’ve got the card!
You complain about the bill while you pay $220 month on cigs and $30 a night on beer. You pay for the repairs on the Harley, only original equipment will do! When the card refuses to pay for something you need, you go without. The Harley’s a classic, point of pride. Your body is taken for granted.
Until you take personal responsibility for your health, the system will be irreparably broken. Until you are responsible for your health, your doctor cannot help you. Until you know the true cost of your indiscretion, healthcare expenses will rise and rationing of care will increase.
By the time you know the cost of having a stroke, it will be too late. Our healthcare system is on life support and can’t survive without you. It can’t survive with you unless you change.
Open your eyes! It may be too late to save our healthcare system but not too late to save you! It’s too late to blame the insurance carrier who enslaved you with the card. The damage is done. The doctors can’t fix it!
They keep trying to make you well while you make yourself sick.
You want every test known to mankind and only the best of everything; by the way, put it on the card. So now that we have discovered the missing link what do we do? That’s a good question!
We live in a society where we are never at fault, never responsible! It must be someone else’s fault. Your heart attack wasn’t the big Mac attack, cigar, and sedentary life style.
It’s the doctor’s fault: bad medicine.
It’s the hospital’s fault: they kept you in the ER too long.
It’s McDonald’s fault: they sold you all those fries.
We expect instant gratification. We want “Instacare,” no waiting, drive- through care. We’re always hurrying to get nowhere fast. We don’t have time to eat right. We don’t have time to exercise. We work hard so we deserve our treats. We are too smart. We insist cigars really aren’t harmful; and after all, we don’t inhale.
We are responsible, we make a living don’t we? We care for our family, don’t we? We take pride in our homes. The Harley is pristine, only the best gas and oil for the hog. Take it out for a spin. Take it in for routine maintenance. Use only factory original parts.
We shove garbage in our mouths. We rarely take our bodies in for a tune-up. We rarely take it out for a spin unless it’s to “filler-up” with more junk.
Unfortunately there are no original spare parts so breakdowns are bad and repairs often less than optimal. Don’t dismay!
Entitled to healthcare!
The best for all, always!
We are entitled to save mom at any cost so she can go back to the nursing home!
We have the card, the government, no matter the system is bankrupt.
Who cares what the cost is? Save grandma!
Grandma cares, she wanted to meet G-d years ago.
She is sick of lying in bed staring at the ceiling!
Grandma is entitled to life at any cost, isn’t she?
Child – “She’s my grandma and I’ll come visit next month, save her.
I can’t get there sooner, I have to work (I’m working hard to support my bad habits so I can have an MI and be saved when it’s my turn). Promise you’ll keep her alive til I get there. Put it on the card.
Do you get my gist?
Until we become responsible for what we do to our bodies, no amount of dollars will fix the system. Until we are responsible for the cost of our care, we will spend ourselves into bankruptcy. No universal plan, no Obamacare, no private system has a chance against the destruction caused by the missing link!
