The Devil on the corner

On the corner of health and happiness sits the devil.  Well, not actually the devil, just one of his minions.  The devil beckons you.  “Come on in, we’ll take care of your every need. You need medication?  We have it.  We even have a hired gun who will prescribe it for you!  You need milk, candy, toilet paper or a light bulb?  We have those for you, as well.  How about cigarettes and alcohol?  We have those too.”

Yep, on the corner of health and happiness stands a store poised to sell you happiness and health and the tools necessary to destroy that happiness and health.  The devil comes in many disguises; and, if we don’t recognize him, then we unwittingly allow him to flourish.

On a corner in your community, you can find the devil masquerading as a healthcare provider.  He will provide the pills you need to treat your emphysema and he will sell you the cigarettes that are killing you.  It is amoral; yet, he thrives.

Why can’t anyone else see him for what he is?  I can see him clearly, but many have been duped by his use of modern day marketing tools to push his wares.  Drive in windows, sales in the Sunday newspaper and clever TV ads are the devil’s new tools.  We are so used to seeing all of these things, that we no longer see the evil that can sit behind them.  On the corner of health and happiness, illness lurks.

In my opinion, you can’t sell health and the things that destroy it in the same location.  Either you are a healthcare provider and you take care of people or you are a pusher, taking advantage of people for the sake of profit.  On the corner of health and happiness, you can find illness and that is just plain wrong!

The devil comes in many disguises.  Be careful that you don’t enlist in the devil’s army!
